Agency history record.
The attorney general is the chief law enforcement officer
of the Commonwealth, advising and representing it in all
matters in which it is a party or has an interest, and
representing the public in affirmative litigation to protect
public interests. The post was designated as a gubernatorial
appointment per Const Pt 2, C 2, S 1, Art 9; then as an
elective office per Const Amend Art 17 (ratified 1855). St
1919, c 350, s 33 provided for a Dept. of the Attorney General
(MGLA c 12). In its annual reports the unit has been called
variously: Attorney General's Dept., Attorney General's
Office, and Office of the Attorney General. Its functions are
currently described in MGLA c 12.

State House, 1915-1926 (bulk 1915-1918).

Summary: St 1915, c 256 and St 1916, c 250 authorized the
Commonwealth to purchase or take land abutting the State House
to allow completion of east and west wing additions. Series
was created by the office of the attorney general as the legal
representative of the Commonwealth in the transactions. Files
contain correspondence, copies of deeds and other legal
documents, receipts, reports, and a map relating to valuation
and purchase of and compensation for land takings.
Correspondents include the State House Building Commission and
State House Commission, successively responsible for oversight
of the project, 1913-1918. There is a small additional file,
1924-1926, relating to property abutting the State House and
its relationship to the 1915-1916 legislation.
