The first "hands on" archaeological exercise involved excavation of "shoe-box sites". Large plastic containers were filled with different colored sands to represents stratigraphic levels. Within each layer were collections of lithic flakes, shell, bone, and pieces of pottery.

This exercise was used to teach excavation techniques and the concept of stratigraphy.
